ABSTRACT: Throughout three poems by Ramón López Velarde, a lyric scene is shaped by means of certain atmospheres, motifs, and rhetoric strategies. In this process, Baudelaire’s influence is consistently revealed. This fact is not merely an homage, but the starting point into originality and tradition, only possible because of the full development of the poet as a critic. Also, the same poetic discourse traces a line that reaches the poets Darío, Villaurrutia, and Paz. Policy Response to External Shocks: Lessons from the Crisis

Emerging economies have been subject to abrupt reversals in capital inflows, which have adverse consequences for economic activity and financial stability. An important question for policymakers is how to respond to a sudden loss of external financing and its negative effects on the domestic economy. The experience of emerging economies through the recent financial crisis shows that those economies with relatively better economic fundamentals were able to implement countercyclical policies. This paper provides a simple analytical framework to rationalize this evidence. In particular, it addresses this issue by developing a small-scale macroeconomic model of the New Keynesian type. Numerical exercises illustrate how both credible monetary and fiscal policies increase policymakers’ degrees of freedom to respond to adverse external shocks.Reversals in capital flows, emerging economies, monetary policy, fiscal policy.

Religion and Attitudes toward Same-Sex Marriage among U.S. Latinos

Objectives. This study examines links between multiple aspects of religious involvement and attitudes toward same-sex marriage among U.S. Latinos. The primary focus is on variations by affiliation and participation, but the possible mediating roles of biblical beliefs, clergy cues, and the role of religion in shaping political views are also considered. Methods. We use binary logistic regression models to analyze data from a large nationwide sample of U.S. Latinos conducted by the Pew Hispanic Forum in late 2006. Results. Findings highlight the strong opposition to same-sex marriage among Latino evangelical (or conservative) Protestants and members of sectarian groups (e.g., LDS), even compared with devout Catholics. Although each of the hypothesized mediators is significantly linked with attitudes toward same-sex marriage, for the most part controlling for them does not alter the massive affiliation/attendance differences in attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Conclusions. This study illustrates the importance of religious cleavages in public opinion on social issues within the diverse U.S. Latino population. The significance of religious variations in Hispanic civic life is likely to increase with the growth of the Latino population and the rising numbers of Protestants and sectarians among Latinos

Wireless Power Transfer For Space Applications: System Design And Electromagnetic Compatibility Compliance Of Radiated Emissions

This dissertation evaluates the possibility of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for space applications, with an emphasis in launch vehicles (rockets). After performing literature review for WPT systems, it was identified that magnetic resonance provides the more suited set of characteristics for this application. Advanced analysis, simulation and testing were performed to magnetic resonance WPT systems to acquire system performance insight. This was accomplished by evaluating/varying coupling configuration, load effects and magnetic element physical characteristics (i.e. wire material, loop radius, etc.). It was identified by analysis, circuit simulation and testing that the best coupling configuration for this application was series-series and series-shunt with Litz wire loop inductors. The main concern identified for the implementation of these systems for space applications was radiated emissions that could potentially generate electromagnetic interference (EMI). To address this EMI concern, we developed the Electromagnetic Compatibility Radiated Emissions Compliance Design Evaluation Approach for WPT Space Systems. This approach systematically allocates key analyses, simulations and tests procedures to predict WPT EMC compliance to NASA’s EMC standard Mil-Std-461E/F. Three prototype/magnetic elements were successfully assessed by implementing the WPT EMC design approach. The electric fields intensity generated by the WPT prototypes/magnetic elements tested were: 30.02 dBµV/m, 28.90 dBµV/m and 82.13 dBµV/m (requirement limit: 140 dBµV/m). All three prototypes successfully transferred power wirelessly and successfully met the NASA EMC requirements

Faith, Race-Ethnicity, and Public Policy Preferences: Religious Schemas and Abortion Attitudes among U.S. Latinos

Research has demonstrated that white conservative Protestants are more opposed to abortion than their Catholic counterparts. At the same time, conservative Protestantism has made significant inroads among U.S. Latinos. This study augments existing research on religion and racial-ethnic variations in abortion attitudes by comparing levels of support for legalized abortion among Catholic and conservative Protestant Latinos. Data are drawn from a nationally representative sample of U.S. Latinos. Significantly greater opposition to abortion is found among religiously devout conservative Protestant Latinos when compared with their Catholic counterparts. Latino Catholicism, which functions as a near-monopolistic, highly institutionalized faith tradition among Hispanics, produces weaker antiabortion attitudes than those exhibited in Latino conservative Protestantism. Among Latinos, conservative Protestantism operates as a niche voluntaristic faith. These factors produce a religious schema that yields robust antiabortion attitudes. This study has important implications for understanding the intersection of race-ethnicity, religion, and public policy preferences
